John Loengard once said: 'If you want something to look interesting, don't light all of it.' If we take the great American photographer's advice, embracing low light is key to creating images full of mystery and intrigue. It's a technique we've often seen in the Sony World Photography Awards, and one that doesn't have to just include night photography. Using a single source when lighting a subject can create an exquisite, balanced portrait or using a dark cloudy day to your advantage can add atmosphere to your landscape shot. As the darker season is upon us, we've picked out some of the best low light photographs entered into the last Awards to inspire you to lower your ISO, reduce your shutter speed and use a wide aperture to create your own low light images.
