From impressive monochrome pictures of Dhaka’s infrastructure to a compelling photo-essay of a young Kenyan athlete, the shortlist for this year’s Student competition highlights the World Photography Organisation and Sony’s dedication to discovering emerging talent that enriches and furthers the photographic medium.
Open to academic institutions worldwide, students were asked to submit a body of work responding to the topic ‘Evolution’, a selection of which you see here. The ten shortlisted students were then chosen and given a final brief: to submit five to 10 images relating to the theme ‘Belong’.
Keeping the competition’s focus of supporting developing talent in mind, all shortlisted photographers will be flown to London to receive a masterclass from artist and 2019 Outstanding Contribution to Photography recipient Nadav Kander, individual portfolio reviews and the opportunity to see their work in exhibition at Somerset House.

The Student Photographer of the Year will be announced April 17 at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony in London, and their work, alongside the nine shortlisted students will be exhibited at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London, open April 18 to May 6. The Student Photographer of the Year is awarded €30,000 of Sony digital imaging equipment for their institution and/or university and was flown to the Awards ceremony in London. All shortlisted students received Sony digital imaging equipment.
