Paweł Jędrusik, a journalist and photographer based in Poland, is shortlisted in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards Open competition.
He says of his work: “I am documenting current events. Jaworzno is not a big city, it only has about 90,000 citizens. Despite this everyday life is very interesting. We don't have big, national events very often, but for me these “little-big” events are often more interesting than the big ones.”
Hi Paweł. Why photography? When and why did you start using the medium
I have been interested in photography for about 10 years. From the beginning I have been interested in photojournalism because I believe people in the pictures are most important for me. At the beginning I photographed football matches. After that I started to photograph local events in Jaworzno. Photography for me is a big passion, and a way of life. There is something magic in freezing time in a single frame.
Tell us more about your image featuring the Third Gala of Dance organised by Elite Academy in Jelen in Jaworzno (Poland)
This photo was shot, as you said, during the Third Gala of Dance organised by Elite Academy in House of Culture in Jelen in Jaworzno. Several hundred children took part in this event. I decided to go behind the scenes, rather than focusing on what is happening on the stage. Behind the scenes girls were preparing for the performance. It took me several minutes before I took this shot.
Do you have a photographic philosophy?

Paweł Jędrusik was born in 1987 in Jaworzno, where he currently resides. He is a journalist for a local newspaper "Co Tydzień", and also a photojournalist. His pictures have been rewarded in such competitions as: Silesian Press Photo (five-time finalist) Objectively Silesia, and the SGL Local Press. He was also the winner of a National Award in the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.
