Reyad Abedin - 2020 Sony Student Grant

Taking his own experience as an immigrant who grew up in a displaced household, Reyad Abedin explores notions of place and identity through his new project In Search of Lost Tune. His hometown Noakhali is located in south-east Bangladesh, a place formerly colonised by the British Empire and at the heart of the arbitrary geographical partition of the area.
According to Reyad, his childhood town is characterised by an extensive flat, coastal, delta land, which is located on the tidal floodplain of the Meghna River. The landscape is almost entirely underwater during the monsoon season. As a result, communities living there are regular victims of the consequences of climate change: thousands of homes disappear every year because of river erosion and floods, before being rebuilt further, and eventually destroyed again, causing families to have to continuously move.
With the Sony Student Grant, Reyad wants to show the wider public his hometown, with all his memories, making the experience of displaced communities more understandable. He hopes to question the notion of home.
