"Rural Life in Urban World" by Nur Hidayati Binti Abd. Rahim

In this series, I would like to deliver a message where certain people still prefer their environment remain the same because it means a lot to them, where they feel the most at ease and want to keep the nostalgic feelings. In my picture, I chose Kampong Bharu in Kuala Lumpur which there are still a lot of people to prefer to live in old days compared to modern days. Old-world Kampong Bharu owes its rural vibe to the traditional Malay wooden stilt houses here, flanked by coconut palms and banana trees. A lively weekly night market sells street food, clothes, and handicrafts.

Kampong Bharu has its own history, Kampong Bharu's elders have turned developers away, saying they want to preserve their ethnic Malay lifestyle. Colonial British administrators gazetted Kampong Bharu as a Malay agricultural settlement in 1900 to allow the Malays to retain their village lifestyle within the city. The reason why I took the photo during night time is to show the life of the city evolve into their environment live in the village surrounding the modern city.
