Asier Garagarza was commended in the Open Architecture category of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards for his image taken at the Niemeyer center in Aviles (Spain).
Tell us more about your successful image in the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards
The picture depicts the genre of architectural photography that I love. I always like people to appear in my images for they bring that point of humanity to the shot. The set of lines directs the viewer’s glance towards those people, which are on that magic vanishing point.
Why photography?
Because it’s the best way I have found to express what I see and feel, and because it gives me freedom and personal satisfaction. I like to say all I do is feel and convey. It is often our actions, not our words, which speak of us. The same applies to photographers; no matter how hard we try to describe our work, it's the images we produce that reveal the content of our soul.
Do you have a photographic philosophy?
For me, photography means freedom. I do what I feel like doing in each moment, without sensing the obligation to do it. Photography is part of me and the camera is the means I have to express that sentiment.
What's next for you?
I don't know what the future will bring me, the only thing I know is that photography has given me things that I could not obtain otherwise, and the most important thing for me is to get to know people from all over the world and share with them the knowledge and passion.
