For the first youth monthly competition in this year's Sony World Photography Awards we kicked things off by asking you to enter your best images that encapsulated excellent composition and design. Be it a still life of wilting tulips dramatically backlit from a bedroom window or an artful shot of architectural details, the core elements of a strong photograph – light, form and texture – were key for this month. We were blown away but all of the incredible images you submitted, and the judges sure had a tough challenge on their hands when it came to choosing just one winner and nine shortlisted images.
A big congratulations to our first youth monthly winner Pubarun Basu, who reached the top with his dramatic image No Escape from Reality. Pubarun's success will be posted across our social media channels, on our weekly newsletter and be in with the running for the Youth Photographer of the Year in the 2021 Awards.
WINNER
Pubarun Basu, India, 19 years old
"I am absolutely stoked to have been chosen as the July Youth competition winner in the Sony World Photography Awards 2021. It means a lot to me, having my work recognised by such a respected organisation. The July theme (Composition and Design) was quite interesting and I had a lot of fun breaking away from my usual point of view and daily life to discover new perspectives. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my parents who have supported me throughout this beautiful journey of developing myself as an artist."
