Open to 12-19 year olds, the Youth competition pays tribute to the next generation of photographers. Every minute of every day, a child around the world decides to pick up a camera and start the long and rewarding learning curve of what it means to be a photographer. With each shot that child takes, they discover what they’re drawn to, what they excel at and what they need to cultivate. The images shortlisted in this year's competition are sure to come to be the photographic chroniclers, interpreters and artists we will admire. Alongside worldwide exposure with today’s leading image-makers, the Youth Photographer of the Year receives a range Sony digital imaging equipment to nurture their vision.
This year entrants were asked to submit a single image relating to the theme ‘Diversity.’ To be understood in its widest sense, the image of diversity could concern people, culture or environment and could be of a local or global concern. All techniques and styles are welcomed, and judges will particularly reward creativity.
Atlanta-based American student Zelle Westfall was awarded for her image Abuot.
“Abuot is my friend from school and she is one of the funniest people I know. In today's society, with skin bleaching products and colorism flooding the media, it's important to highlight the beauty of dark-skinned women who are often told that they are ‘too dark.”
