An Old Soul
Melina Schildberg
Series description

During her first trip to East Africa, Melina Schildberg was honoured to encounter this giant tusker called Craig. She describes how ‘he was impressively huge and at the same time elegant and quiet. If you look into his eyes he seems so wise and lonely at the same time.’ As she stood in front of him, the clouds in the background opened up to reveal the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Together they tell a story of solitude and time.

Biography

My name is Melina Schildberg, I am 28 years old, and I am a photographer from Germany. I discovered my passion for photography at an early age, but it was only a year ago that I decided to pursue it as a career. With my images, I want to inspire people to see the world from a new perspective and to believe in their dreams. My greatest desire is to reach others through my photographs.

Craig and Kilimanjaro
Two giants in one photograph; Schildberg felt overwhelmed to photograph a scene like this.
Meeting a Legend
The massive figure of Craig moved gracefully past, his tusks sweeping the air. His every step was deliberate, and the quiet rustle of his movement blended with the wind. The sheer scale of his presence was humbling, yet his demeanour exuded a calm and gentle energy.
A Silent Connection
In this black-and-white photograph, Craig, the mighty tusker, stands so large that his massive frame completely obscures the towering peak of Kilimanjaro behind him. Despite his immense size, there was a quiet, almost silent connection between the elephant and the photographer, his steady gaze creating a powerful, wordless bond. The monochrome tones enhance the timeless feel of the moment.
Face to Face
Craig turns his head slightly, the intensity of his gaze is profound in a moment of connection that feels timeless.
A Timeless Journey
With slow, steady steps, Craig continued along his solitary path. His immense form moved gracefully, his silhouette framed by the vast Kenyan landscape. The gentle sway of his body and the rhythm of his steps left a sense of peace and wonder in his wake.
