Shortlist; Tajo by Stefano Sbrulli
The city of Cerro de Pasco in central Peru has more than 70,000 inhabitants, many of them clustered around the rim of an open mine known as El Tajo. This vast pit is more than a mile long and a quarter of a mile deep. The ground here has long been a source of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, but the consequences of such heavy excavation are having a seriously negative impact on the local population.
