World traveller with an interest in the arts

Polish photographer Justyna Zdunczyk enjoys turning her lens towards a variety of subject matter, especially travel. Here we look at her recent work, where she captured quiet moments on the streets of London, Madrid and Taichung.

Since discovering photography 12 years ago Justyna Zdunczyk is rarely found without her camera. Winner of the 2018 Wildlife category in our Open competition and the Poland National Award, the Polish photographer turns her lens towards a variety of subject matter. Fascinated by landscape, wildlife, street, portraiture and interiors, Justyna’s enduring curiosity for the world has led her to constantly look for new approaches in her image-making. Justyna’s commissioned portfolio includes family portraits and fashion assignments. Here she shares her thoughts and recent travel imagery from London, Madrid and Taichung.

What was it that drew you to photography?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in the arts. When I was younger I loved painting and drawing. Photography was the next step and it stole my heart completely.

Tell us more about your image that won last year’s Wildlife category in the Open Competition?
I took that picture during my travels to California in 2017. It was one of the most beautiful moments during the trip: I was about to leave the Sequoia National Park when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a beautiful clearing bathed in a fog. Without a second thought I ran over to the scene with my camera. When I reached the clearing a curious mule deer started walking towards me, cheerfully chewing his supper. Other deer soon joined him and we stood there together for a while, watching each other. It was a very special moment, one I often wish had lasted forever.

You’re an avid traveler, where’s next on your list?
Japan! I can’t wait for this trip. Right now I’m in research mode so am spending lots of time reading about Japanese culture and looking up places to visit. I’ve already made a list of subjects I’d like to photograph. My dream is to move to Japan for a few months to work on some longer-term projects.

What project are you currently working on?
Right now I’m working on a personal project – which I won’t reveal just yet – and am planning my trip to Japan.
