Photographic and scientific studies of a group of orangutans at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center in Indianapolis, Indiana demonstrate the individuality of each primate as well as their clear awareness of self. There is obviously a sentient being looking back through the lens. Orangutans and humans share 97 percent of their DNA sequence. Decisions are made on both local and international levels that can save or destroy orangutan habitats - and therefore the primates themselves - in their two remaining areas in Sumatra and Borneo.
