Every week I buy flowers for my room. They bloom and fade. This weekly transformation is both so ordinary and so beautiful. Before they die, I make these images. Each time, I am taken by surprise at the force of the unconscious - an inner process I would rather ignore. My skin changes, I am hot and forgetful. I've got to that age when I sense I am disappearing. Menopause is a time of life that is both feared and disregarded in our culture. The response is to medically control it and/or cosmetically alter ourselves to images of youth. My flowers are vulnerable to the effects of time; they have passed their bloom and yet there is such beauty in their imperfection and the imprints of change. After The Bloom is influenced by the Dutch still life painters, yet taken by a domestic scanner.
