The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is driving digital innovation and technological advancement, so here at the World Photography Organisation we thought it was the ideal date to announce the winner and shortlist for this year’s Sony World Photography Awards Alpha Female Award.
Chosen from successful entries to the Open competition, the shortlisted photographers embrace a range of styles, stories, and subject matter. Elli Asker’s still life multiple exposure image and Andreja Ravnak’s aerial view of a South Moravian agricultural landscape highlight how digital photography can be used in creative ways, while Margit Lisa Roeder’s image of The Pass Museum, which is located at an altitude of 2,509m, shows innovation in architecture.
The winning image for this year is Zhu Yang and her image Lightning. Showing a pedestrian with a sun umbrella passing through a tunnel, the low angle and monochrome look of Yang’s dynamic street shot stood out to the judges. Alongside having her image included in the Sony World Photography Awards book and exhibition, Yang wins a range of Sony digital imaging kit.
Set up three years ago by the World Photography Organisation and Sony US, the Alpha Female Award is part of Sony’s Alpha Female programme, which focuses on creating opportunities for professional photographers, videographers, and filmmakers to help foster a richer, more diverse creative community. Created to empower female photographic talent and promote their work to an international audience, the award aims to create a powerful platform and ensure the photographic industry is a space where both genders can excel.
