Shortlist, Brazilian Democracy Theorem by Leonardo Costa Braga
This photo essay depicts the executive, legislative and judiciary buildings of Three Powers Square in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, as well as the sculptures that have been installed there. The sculpture of the two figures was created by Bruno Giorgi, and is known as Os Candangos, or The Warriors. It represents the workers who built the capital of Brazil. Giorgi was Brazilian, descended from Italians, and went to Europe to study art. While there, he fought against Italian fascism and in the Spanish Civil War. The other sculpture in the square, The Justice, is by Alfredo Ceschiatti. Professor of sculpture and drawing at the University of Brasilia, he resigned in solidarity with colleagues persecuted for their political choices under the military dictatorship. Brazil is going through turbulent political times. The war between the executive, legislative and judiciary powers has shaken the Brazilian identity. The Warriors makes us reflect on the need for civil society to organise itself as the fourth of these powers.
