Photographers who are successful in the Sony World Photography Awards often go on to receive representation, are invited to show their work at exhibitions and gain global recognition, propelling their careers forward in myriad ways and unlocking new opportunities.
That’s where the idea of #SWPAnews comes in - a regular write-up featuring the latest news and updates from the Sony World Photography Awards alumni. From book launches to exhibitions to new projects, we can’t wait to share with you what the previous winners and finalists have been up to since their success in the Awards. As summer is always brimming with photography festivals, in this week’s write up we’ll be largely focusing on these exciting events that bring photographers, curators and key industry voices together.
Valery Poshtarov won the Portraiture category in last year’s Awards for Father and Son, a series documenting the revolutionary act of fathers and sons holding hands, sometimes for the very first time. You can find a continuation of his series at the Cortona On The Move photo festival held in Italy until 3 November.

Last year’s Student Photographer of the Year, Kayin Luys, has been busy since accepting his award at the black-tie ceremony in London in April, where more than 500 guests attended. In July, Kayin held a duo exhibition with Eva Maria Bouillon in Atelier De Tank in Bruges, Belgium. Currently, his work is being shown at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium until 29 September.

Sujata Setia won the Creative category in last year’s Sony World Photography Awards for A Thousand Cuts, a photography series that uses mixed media to visualise patterns of domestic abuse in the South Asian community. An image from Setia’s series recently won the LensCulture Critic’s Choice Award.

Adam Ferguson won the prestigious title of the Photographer of the Year in 2022 for his series Migrantes. A year later, Ferguson had a solo display of Silent Wind, Roaring Sky, a new project about the Australian outback. Recently, Ferguson published Big Sky (GOST books), a photography book which features an extended selection of images from the Silent Wind, Roaring Sky series. Ferguson was also just shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2024.

Eddo Hartmann, last year’s Landscape winner for 'The Polygon', will exhibit his photographs of Dutch music festivals at the Rijksmuseum from 27 September 2024 until 12 January 2025.

Hugh Kinsella Cunningham has been awarded multiple times in the past few editions of the Sony World Photography Awards. His most recent accolades include the Amnesty International Media Award for photojournalism and the Red Cross Humanitarian Visa d’Or award 2024.
