Shortlist; Vanilla and Anti-Riot Vehicles by Jose Luis Rissetti
During the Chilean protests of 2019-2020, known as the ‘Social Outbreak’, protestors threw bottles of paint at riot control vehicles in order to restrict the drivers’ visibility. My series of images captures these coloured spots in a pictorial style. As a counterpart to the colourful images are the ‘Vanillas’, which depict the residue of discharged pellet cartridges. I collected them in Plaza Baquedano, Santiago, and photographed them on a clean, white background, to give a forensic feel. These weapons have resulted in more than 460 people in Chile sustaining damage to their eyes or even being blinded.
