Photographers should always be encouraged to embrace their imagination and break away from the predictable, the tropes, the familiar. From cyanotypes to cutting-edge techniques, creativity is rewarded in the Sony World Photography Awards – there are categories in the Open and Professional competitions dedicated to the theme. Subject matter can be varied and technically manipulated images are welcomed. Below are nine images submitted to the Awards these past three years that break the boundaries of the medium and show the photographers have experimented and explored new territory.
