Bio

When I first started out as a photographer, a mentor and teacher asked, “Well, what do you want to shoot?” to which I enthusiastically replied, “EVERYTHING!”

Though I was gently disabused of this grandiosity and guided toward specific categories where my eye was naturally drawn, over time I realized my original answer was pretty close to the right one for me. Because where my eye was drawn was always to the story of an image – the flash of action and light, the snapshot of beauty, the decisive moment of thought or expression. And every image, it seems - whether portrait, landscape, still life, animal, vegetable or mineral - has its own story in there somewhere. The trick is holding long enough to capture it or having the great good fortune of grabbing it in the blink of an eye!

My artistic journey since then has been an eclectic one as well, taking me down various avenues of the creative arts, but always with a camera in hand. Though writing and music generally took center stage, in recent years I've added the visual component of my “voice” into the mix as well.

It has been a slow, steady process of experimentation, one that has ultimately led to my particular style of visual storytelling. My learning has been mostly instinctual, with excellent tutelage and guidance from renowned and respected photographers and teachers along the way. What has evolved over years of shooting on the road with various bands, recording international adventures in projects both personal and creative, or capturing those decisive moments in the natural or ambient light available (my favorite way to shoot), is what has ultimately found its way into my personal portfolio.

Beyond my photography work, I'm an active columnist and blogger, both at my personal site, (www.rockpapermusic.com), as well as at my column at THE HUFFINGTON POST (www.huffingtonpost.com/lorraine-devon-wilke), both of which are illustrated with my photographs whenever possible.

My Equipment

I work exclusively with Canon. I've done most of my shooting with the venerable Canon 30D with a Canon L Series Zoom Lens (EF 24-70mm 1:2.8), though some of my favorite shots were captured with a Canon Powershot SD1200 IS!
