The photographic works of James Sparshatt will be on display at the end of this month in an upcoming exhibition at 3 Bedfordbury Gallery.
“Rhythms of Emotion - Music and Dance in the Latin World” features stunning black and white images that capture the energetic vibe surrounding traditional Latin culture.
Deriving from his early photojournalist background as editor of the Bolivian Times in the 1990s, Sparshatt’s unique interest in Latin music and dance in Cuba and Argentina is apparent through his visually intriguing photographs. One soft focus greyscale photograph embraces a private moment between dancing lovers, conveying an intense emotional response for the viewer.
In “Rhythms of Emotion,” Sparshatt has an uncanny ability to illustrate the dramatic tension, passion, and vivacity that lingers in the air around the streets of Havana and Buenos Aires late night tango clubs. Sparshatt provides commentary on his work:
“My Rhythms of Emotion series celebrates that human interaction, in particular the rich and vibrant musical heritage of places such as Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. I hope they evoke the passion inherent in Latin life…that when you look at them you can almost hear the rhythmic beat of the drums and feel the sweat running down your back.”

The images from the exhibition are printed as limited edition selenium-toned silver gelatin hand prints. A selection of these images is now being produced as palladium platinum prints by specialist platinum printers Paul and Max Caffell of 31 Studio who also work with David Bailey and Sebastião Salgado.
In addition to solo exhibitions in New York, San Antonio, Havana, Dublin, and London, some of Sparshatt’s photographs have been used for advertising campaigns and appeared in magazines such as Elle and GQ, as well as major UK broadsheets.
Sparshatt was a 2008 winner at the International Exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado, USA, shortlisted in the Sony World Photography Awards in 2009, and Finalist in Fine Art at the 2009 Worldwide Photography Gala Awards.
Currently, the photographer lives and works in London. His first book, Cuba Land of Spirit was published in October 2006.
