'The Girl with the Red Hair' by Lauren Pissochet

The short film looks at the womens transition and her ability to change into the Phoenix, her alter ego. The Phoenix is the symbol of her spirit, a fire spirit who goes out to build itself a nest of twigs in order to ignite herself; both nest and bird burn fiercely in order to reborn a new to live again. She is destined to live as long as her old self. In very few mythological stories of the Phoenix, it is said that they are able to change into humans - ‘The Girl with Red Hair’.

The way this film has been composited is simply stunning !

    why did this win?
it resembles the state of fashion "movies" at the mo - simple idea filmed poorly, over and over, and then edited to create an aRTy piece of work without technical or idea merit
is this what democratisation of the formerly technical arts has reduced us to?

a...shy, when I read your comment I thouhght that you are one that did not get through....Sorry for you, but don't be bitter:) The video by Lauren may be simple but it's stunning and I think that it has a great idea behind it. Well done - all, movie and music works great!

aaaashy, I'm sorry that it did not resonate with you. What a shame that you feel so negative about it!
This video was my first real attempt at making "a short film" or whatever you may like to call it, I made it in my 2nd year of studying photography, so I'm extremely flattered that I won it. Probably just as surprised as you! ;) But know this... the visions (shots) realized came from my own imagination, I use the metaphor of the 'Phoenix' to make the root idea even clearer. I worked extremely hard to make it (especially because I wasn't a film student) and in the end, I did the absolute best that I could, and that is all anyone can ever do. Perhaps all the people who voted can tell you why it won?

danusius: thank you so much for your comment, your support is really appreciated. :) Making this video, made me feel so alive, I hope that energy is shared with others when watching.

and aaashy, thank you also for your comment, the fact that you spared the time and energy to do so shows that people are going away with some kind of re-action, which is much better than none.

Out of curiosity, what did you film it with? Was it originally 60 fps?

  • aesse 28/07/2011 18:54

Lauren ! You are very talent at this millenium... Congratulation because your job is inside the teme: graphic, photo, music and video !

That's the nature of competitions-some good pieces win and some bad pieces win. I have entered many competitions and am suprised if a relatively weak image wins and my 'best' images don't get a look in!
All in all it is part hard work and vision and part good luck if you win......however the more hard work I put in the luckier I seem to get :)

  • Bitedacier 28/07/2011 19:05

    aaaashy is right
can't believe that won.. what was supposed to be art just turned out to be a bland and pretentious piece of c...p, well didn't expect much from a "photography student" anyways
peeps seem to be more impressed by "pretty colors" rather than pure substance
    that's so sad

casebrown: the camera I shot with was the Motion Pro X3 (high speed camera)
    aesse: thank you very much!
Mark French: I completely agree with you. :)
Bitedacier: I would really love to see some of your moving image work, perhaps I could learn something from you?

    Hi !
    I'm just an amateur.
I really like the sequence with the girl jumping in the grass. Very nice.
After I've got an impression to look an advertising of a perfume... Sorry to tell that, just my impression.
I think that comes from the music I really don't like. (I'm a musician). The music sounds to much trendy, without really personality...
I like the montage. Good job !
    Thanks ! ;)

I've noticed that it plays out of sync here (music with visual imagery) but it might just be my computer... if not, you can also watch it here at: http://www.vimeo.com/125111.
