UNICEF, A Photo Pledge for Children’s Rights

UNICEF, A Photo Pledge for Children’s Rights
On November 20th 2009, we launched this very special Focus Award to mark the 20th anniversary for the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), supported by the Sony EYE SEE programme.
The campaign called on people around the world to pledge their support for children's rights.
Six lucky youth from across the globe won the opportunity to attend the Sony World Photography Awards in Cannes for a day's mentoring led by world-renowned humanitarian photographer Reza. This was followed by a trip to a UNICEF mission in Ethiopia where the winners were able to document the work being carried out in the mission.
In Ethiopia, the youths also joined the Eye See workshop, which gives children all over the world training in basic photographic skills.
The youths joined 30 local children in Hawassa where they visited a fishing village, orphaned families and medical posts, creating fantastic imagery to highlight the cause.
Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Representative for Ethiopia, said: “UNICEF is delighted to be hosting this workshop for these five talented young photographers, alongside 24 Ethiopian children. We hope all the participants will gain valuable insight into the challenges faced by children in Ethiopia and that they will continue to use photography to advocate for children’s rights.”
