2008/2009 Focus Award

Princes Rainforest Charity

In 2008 The World Photography Awards partnered with The Princes Rainforests Project (PRP), a programme established by HRH the Prince of Wales.  The winner was provided a grant to document deforestation in the Amazon, DRC and Indonesia.

The images have been collated into a book being given by HRH Prince Charles to world leaders ahead of the UN conference for Climate Change.

Judges in this programme included model & photographer Helena Christensen; adventurer, David de Rothschild; President of Magnum Photos, Stuart Franklin; co-founder Friends of the Earth, Roberto Smeraldi; Executive Director of Greenpeace, John Suaven; and Senior Editor of National Geographic, Kathy Moran.

The winner of this programme was Spanish photographer Daniel Beltra who set out on the challenging assignment to photograph three major rainforests regions in a very short 3 months.

Daniel is now an Academy member and continues to follow his passion for documenting environmental issues around the globe such as the recent Louisiana oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
